W&J moves past Geneva, 3-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – A 3-0 sweep of Geneva on Thursday, Oct. 12, earned the Washington & Jefferson volleyball team a season series split against its Presidents' Athletic Conference rivals.
 
The win improves the Presidents' overall record to 9-9 for the season with an even 6-6 PAC record as the Golden Tornadoes fall to 9-17 overall and 7-5 in conference.
 
Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) tallied a game-high 12 kills on the night, her 11th match with 10 or more kills, and finished with a .444 hitting percentage, helped by zero errors for the junior. Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) finished with eight kills, two service aces and four blocks.
 
Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) and Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both totaled six kills in the match as Jacques tied Lydic and Eich for most blocks on the team with four.
 
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished with 33 assists and 12 digs in the match, the ninth time this season in which she has recorded 30 or more assists and 10 or more digs. Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) tied the game high with 20 digs while Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy), McKenzie Merenick (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) all finished with double-digit digs as well.
 
W&J outhit Geneva in each set and held the Golden Tornadoes to a combined .056 hitting percentage for the match.
 
The Presidents will look to sweep the season series against Westminster on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa., for an 11:00 a.m. PAC contest.
