WASHINGTON, Pa. – A goal from
Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) midway through the second overtime period gave the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team an exciting 2-1 senior day win over Empire 8 Conference foe Hartwick on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The win improves the Presidents to 8-3 overall and earns them their first 5-0 start in conference play since 2014. Hartwick falls to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the E8.
Boyd's goal came in the 91st minute when W&J earned a penalty corner, which was sent in to
Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) at the 15-yard line who then passed to Boyd who fired from 12 yards out for the game-winning goal.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half,
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) tallied the tying goal from seven yards out off a feed from
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast).
The first goal of the game came in the 32nd minute as the Hawks were able to bat a ball out of midair into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Jenna Jaworski (Venetia, Pa./North Allegheny) led the team in her final regular season home game of her W&J career, as she notched career highs in shots and shots on goal with 10 and seven, respectively. Buyan followed with five shots and three on target, including her goal.
Ashley Overton (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) finished with four shots with three finding the target. Boyd tallied three shots and a goal and Shaak added two shots, one on goal, and an assist.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) earned her eighth win of the season, making six saves in her last regular season home game in the cage. She was helped by
Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) and Shaak who combined for three defensive saves in the contest, two coming from Karr.
W&J held a 26-13 shot advantage, including a 21-7 margin after the first half, with a 13-10 edge in shots on goal.
The Presidents will be back on the field on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Wooster for nonconference action.
