Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

First half goals drive W&J to 2-1 win over Saint Vincent

WASHINGTON, Pa. – With two first half goals and strong defensive play down the stretch, the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening, Oct. 18.

The Presidents earn their second win in as many games to improve to 9-5 overall in 2017 with a mark of 2-3 in the PAC. The loss drops the Bearcats to 3-12-1 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

With the game still scoreless in the 12th minute, Junior Mensah (Chantilly, Va./Broad Run) took a throw-in deep in Bearcat territory. He fired the ball into the middle of the penalty box and found Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) who drove the ball into the back of the net for his third score of the season.

In the 25th minute, a cross was sent into the penalty box where President attackers and Bearcat defenders battled for control of the ball. In space, Aleksandr DeHaven (Tampa, Fla./Plant) saw the ball land on his foot and he let loose a close range shot. His initial attempt was saved but the ball came right back to him and he didn't miss on his second try as he put the Presidents ahead 2-0.

As time began to wind down in regulation, the Bearcats got on the board with under five minutes remaining.

DeHaven and Matt Prezioso (Clairton, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led W&J with four shots in the contest as DeHaven put two of four attempts on goal to record his second goal of the season.

Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) shot twice, among the other six Presidents to tally a shot attempt, as the Presidents concluded with a 15-4 edge in total shots, including 8-1 in the first half, and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) saw two shots on goal in the game and stopped one to earn his ninth win of the campaign.

The Presidents will get back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 21, as they host PAC rival Westminster in a 3:00 p.m. Homecoming match.
