BETHANY, W.Va. – With a goal in the 28th minute to put Washington & Jefferson ahead, 2-0, against Bethany,
Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) set the Women's Soccer program record for most goals in a career (62), her first of three goals on the night to help the Presidents to a 7-0 win over the Bison on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The win extends the Presidents' winning streak to six games as their overall record improves to 11-5-1 with a PAC record of 6-2 while the Bison drop to 6-12 overall and 4-4 in league play. With the win, W&J has officially clinched the No. 3 seed for the upcoming PAC Championship tournament
The 7-0 victory over Bethany is the sixth 5-0 or better win for the Presidents this season and the fourth during the team's current six-game winning streak
Toohey recorded her first point of the game when she assisted
Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville/Saint Francis (Pa.)) in the 20th minute of play. Just over eight minutes later, Toohey scored an unassisted goal to pass Nicole Bosley and Holly Shipley atop program's career goals list to put the Presidents up 2-0.
In the 42nd minute, Toohey scored her second goal of the night, with the assist going to
Courtney Finney (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), as the Presidents took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The scoring didn't slow in the second half for W&J as, in the 59th minute,
Sam Fields (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) scored her second goal of the season off a pass from
Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Toohey added her third goal of the night, her second hat trick in the last three outings, from
Grace Rangel (Bristow, Va./Patriot) and
Josie Madden (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward).
W&J extended its lead from five to seven with unassisted goals from
Julie Halula (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) in the 83rd and 85th minutes, respectively, to yield the final margin.
Toohey's three goal-night gives her 64 goals in her career and the seven points in the match propel her to 141, one shy of tying Jen Pergola for third most in program history. She totaled eight shots against the Bison and put six on goal to lead all players in the match.
Grimm's goal was her 11th of the season, second most on the team, and she has now scored one goal in five of the last six matches. She put three of her four shot attempts on target.
Ruzzini, Finney, Madden and Rangel each tallied one assist in the game, including Ruzzini's PAC-leading 12th helper of the season, and combined for seven shots on the night, three on goal. Halula's and Saldivar's goals were their first goals of the season to close out a strong team performance.
Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) was not required to make a save in earning her ninth win of the season as her defense yielded one off target shot coming in the seventh minute.
The Presidents finished with 34 shots and 22 on goal, the most since the 2014 team shot 38 times and sent 23 attempts on goal in a 3-0 win over the Bison.
W&J will conclude the 2017 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28, when it hosts PAC rival Waynesburg in a 3:00 p.m. match, following Senior Day recognition during pregame.
