WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson sent its seniors out with a pair of 3-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference sweeps of Thiel at the Henry Memorial Gymnasium.
The doubleheader, not a traditional volleyball scheduling tactic, came about after a virus swept through Thiel's campus earlier in the semester, which forced the postponement of the original first matchup between the two squads.
W&J improves to 14-10 on the year behind a five-match winning streak and concludes the regular season with an 11-7 mark in the PAC. The Presidents now await to see if they will be the fourth seed and host a quarterfinal match against Geneva on Tuesday, or be the fifth seed and travel to Geneva the same night. That will be determined by the outcome of Saturday afternoon's Geneva-Bethany match.
The Presidents claimed the first match by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-18 before winning the nightcap 25-20, 25-16, 25-21.
Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) (13) and
Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) (12) led the Presidents with double-digit kills.
Brooke Lininger (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) recorded eight, while
Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) added seven and
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) contributed six. O'Brien also handed out a match-best 37 assists.
Defensively, four Presidents reached double figures in digs, led by
Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and
Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) with 19 apiece. Eich had four blocks (three solo), while Lydic and Bernesser each posted three.
The second match saw Lydic (15) and Eich (14) combine for 29 kills and a .431 hitting percentage. O'Brien dished out 42 helpers to lead the attack as well.
Lydic posted five blocks (two solo), while O'Brien added four in the second victory of the day. Coughlin paced all players with 33 digs, her second 30-plus dig match of the season, in game two.
Whenever Tuesday's opponent is known, it, as well as the location, will be posted on the
W&J Volleyball schedule page.
