ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Presidents put together a 3-2 day to take third place at the Scotty Wood Duals hosted by Muhlenberg.
Washington & Jefferson opened the day of wrestling with a 28-18 win over Lackawanna and then bested the Temple club team by a 31-18 count. The Red & Black were narrowly defeated by Camden Community College (N.J.), 22-21, and fell against the host Mules, 26-21, setting up a third-place match with Keystone in which W&J won 42-12.
A trio of Presidents posted 5-0 days and a fourth had a 4-0 showing to lead the way.
At 125, freshman
Daniel Florentino (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) picked up his first five collegiate victories, pinning Muhlenberg's Cliff Cornell in 2:04 and recording major decisions against Lackawanna (17-5) and Camden (13-4). He also picked up a forfeit against Temple and scored a 5-2 decision over Keystone's Colby Bronzburg.
Sophomore
Mike Heinl (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) went 5-0 and earned bonus points in every match with four falls totaling 5:25 and a major decision. He opened the day by pinning Warren Moran of Lackawanna in 1:52 and followed that with a 50-second pin against Temple's Jake Yoder. Against Camden, he needed just 1:09 to pin Jason Groff and in the third-place match against Keystone, pinned Tahron Sheffield in 1:34. His major decision was in the Muhlenberg match where he took down Josh Hickey by a 17-3 margin.
Sophomore
Hunter Neely (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth) also posted a 5-0 record on the day at 165, posting two major decisions, two technical falls and a win by forfeit. His technical falls were against Vincent Delligatti (22-7, 6:39) of Camden and Michael Dougan (20-5, 4:16) of Muhlenberg. The major decisions were in the first two matches of the day, 13-2 versus Sczar Charles of Lackawanna and 11-3 against Tegan Durishin from Temple.
Senior
Sam Florentino's (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) 4-0 day at 149 also stood out for the Presidents thanks to two pins and two decisions. Neither win-by-fall match saw the bout get out of the first period, needing just 1:46 to pin Lackawanna's Najee Russell and 2:45 to down Camden's Mark Woods. He went on to earn a 12-6 decision over Muhlenberg's Austin Sherman and then squeezed out an 11-10 decision in the third-place match against Keystone.
W&J will host a quad meet on Saturday, Dec. 2 with Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More (4:30 p.m.) and nonconference opponents Penn State Behrend (3 p.m.) and West Liberty (6 p.m.).
