Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late run pushes No. 2/4 Thomas More past W&J, 73-50

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson had the game within four points (51-47) with just under seven minutes to play, but No. 2/4 Thomas More scored 24 of the final 29 points en route to a 73-50 win in a match-up of the Presidents' Athletic Conference's top two teams.

The Presidents conclude the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and 13-5 mark in the PAC, good for the second seed and a double bye to the semifinals in next week's league tournament. That event will be held at Thomas More, which wraps up the top seed and year at 25-0 and 18-0 within the league.

W&J trailed by six points, 33-27, at halftime and scored the first four points of the second period to make it a two-point game, 33-31. Rachel Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored the two buckets on jumpers, but the Saints responded with an 11-2 run to open up a double-digit lead, 44-33.

A 12-5 spurt by W&J, featuring seven points by Parker and capped by a three-pointer from Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), brought W&J within four at 49-45 with 7:33 to play. The two teams traded buckets and then the Saints would score 22 of the final 25 points to close out the regular season.

Thomas More out-rebounded W&J, 50-41, including 22 offensive rebounds. The Saints held advantages in bench points (24-13), points in the paint (38-18) and points off turnovers (28-7).

Parker (14 points, 15 rebounds) and Bellhy (12 points, 11 rebounds) both turned in double-doubles on the day. For Parker, it was the fifth of the season, while Bellhy's marked the fourth and third-straight. Cortazzo ended up with nine points, while Alyssa Riley (North Ridge, Ohio/North Ridgeville) chipped in seven points off the bench.

The Presidents will play the first PAC semifinal game at Thomas More on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
