BEREA, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team was dealt its first loss of 2017 in a 17-3 setback at Baldwin Wallace.
The loss drops the Presidents to 1-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-1.
The hosts scored the first seven goals of the game, including a 5-0 first quarter, before
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) got the Presidents on the board with a man-up goal at 5:50 of the second period off an assist by
Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney).
W&J tacked on two more goals on the fourth quarter to yield the final margin:
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) from
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) at 11:50 and Heinig from
Kyle MacKenzie (Manchester Center, Vt./Burr and Burton Seminary) with 22 seconds to play.
The Presidents were successful on 11-of-18 clear attempts, including 9-of-11 after the first quarter.Â
Heinig's four shots were a team high, while
Rocco Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) both paced the defense with two caused turnovers.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) made 16 saves on the afternoon and finished one off the game high with seven ground balls.
W&J returns to action on Wednesday, March 1, hosting Hood (Md.) at Alexandre Stadium for a 5 p.m. nonconference match.
