Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Presidents downed by Blazers, 15-10

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team was defeated by Hood, 15-10, on Wednesday night, Mar. 1, in a nonconference game.

Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) put the Presidents ahead early in the game, scoring his sixth goal of the season just 4:45 into the game. He also scored the next two goals in the quarter to complete the natural hat trick and give W&J a 3-0 lead. The Blazers countered with a goal with just under two minutes to play in the quarter followed by two more goals within the first three minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at three goals apiece.

The Presidents regained the lead, scoring three of the next four goals to go ahead 6-4 as Heinig scored once and Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) tallied the other two. But, from 4:59 remaining in the second to 14:37 left in the fourth quarter, the Blazers scored seven unanswered goals as they seized an 11-6 lead. After Heinig added his fifth goal of the game, the Blazers scored three more to take a commanding 14-7 lead.

W&J scored three of the final four goals of the game, two from Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) and another from Curran, before the Blazers scored with five seconds left to yield the final margin.

Heinig's five-goal performance marks the third time in his career in which he has scored at least five goals while he also recorded his 20th career hat trick, second this season. Whipkey added two assists on top of his two scores to give him a four-point game and Curran finished with three goals for his seventh career hat trick.

Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) contributed two assists as the freshman has recorded a point in all three games to begin his career, including two multi-point games.

Seven different Presidents were tied for the team lead with two ground balls each and Whipkey led the Presidents with two caused turnovers.

Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) (1-2) took the loss as the Presidents' goalkeeper as he stopped 18 shots. John Hoffman started in net for the Blazers but was replaced in the second half by Noah Waterlander (1-0). Hoffman made three saves while Waterlander made four as they both played 30 minutes.

The Presidents will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 4, when they host Susquehanna in an afternoon nonconference matchup beginning at 2:30 p.m.
