Women's Lacrosse denied at Frostburg State in 2017 opener

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Reigning Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference champions Washington & Jefferson opened the 2017 season with a 20-6 nonconference defeat at Frostburg State (Md.).

The loss moves the Presidents to 0-1 this season while the Bobcats improve to an even 2-2.

It was the hosts that would strike for the first two goals before Monica Ewansik (Gibosnia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got the Presidents on the board for the first time this season at the 27:22 mark of the first half, 24 seconds after FSU made it 2-0. The Bobcats posted the next two goals before Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) cut the deficit in half, 4-2, at 23:56. It would be the final goal of the first half for the visitors, as FSU would score the next 12 goals, including nine to end the opening period.

In the second half, Ewansik and Kallos both found the back of the net once more on unassisted scores, while Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) tallied a pair of markers on assists from Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) and Jenna Allen (Sanford, Fla./Seminole).

Ewansik (six), Kallos (four) and LaRochelle (three) combined for 13 of W&J's 15 shots, with Katelyn White (Linthicum, Md./North County) registering the remaining two. Kallos posted five draw controls, moving her into third place on the Presidents' career list at 141, while White added four in her debut and Ewansik and LaRochelle both snagged a pair.

Michaela Mulokey (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) made eight saves in the first half and was dealt the loss, her first since March 15, 2016, snapping a 12-game winning streak. Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J Roberts) played the second half in cage and made three saves.

W&J will continue on the road with a 1 p.m. match at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, March 4.
