W&J drops 12-8 decision at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team was unable to recover from an early deficit, losing 12-8 to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, March 4, in a nonconference matchup.

The Battling Bishops scored the first three goals of the game before Monica Ewansik (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got the Presidents on the board with 19:15 remaining in the opening half. It marked her 100th collegiate goal, after the senior scored 57 times in two seasons at Sweet Briar (Va.) before transferring to W&J last year when she collected 40 goals.

Ohio Wesleyan scored two of the next three goals to take a 6-2 lead before the Presidents scored three unanswered, one by Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and two by Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), as the Presidents trailed 6-5 with 24:16 left in the second half.

LaRochelle added her fourth goal of the game after Ohio Wesleyan scored to keep the Presidents within a goal with 20:37 left to play, but Ohio Wesleyan scored five of the next seven goals to yield the final margin.

On just seven shots, LaRochelle scored five times in the game to lead the Presidents' offense. Kallos finished with four points as she scored twice and assisted on two goals and Ewansik added her third goal of the season.

Kallos picked up a game- and career-high 11 ground balls while Allison Onslow (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Katelynn Linthicum (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) picked up four ground balls each. Kallos caused two turnovers to lead the Presidents' defense as she, Ewansik and LaRochelle each won three draw controls.

Michaela Mulokey (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) (0-2) took the loss in net for the Presidents as she made 11 saves and Kelly Coffyn (1-1) earned the win for the Battling Bishops, stopping five shots.

The Presidents will return to action for their home opener on Wednesday, March 8, in a 6 p.m. nonconference battle against Allegheny.
