WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Allegheny spoiled the 2017 home opener for the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team as the Gators bested the Presidents by a margin of 17-3 at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J remains winless in the early stages of nonconference play, dropping to 0-3. Allegheny improves to 2-1 this season.
All three of W&J's goals were scored by freshmen as
Katelyn White (Linthicum, Md./North County) put the Presidents on the board and snapped a seven-goal run by Allegheny at the 4:23-mark of the first half off a helper from
Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin).
In the second half,
Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) found the back of the net twice for her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season, an unassisted tally at 16:58 and off a Kallos pass with 2:57 to play.
LaRochelle led W&J and tied for the match high with seven shots, while Kallos added four shots.
Katelynn Linthicum (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) led the way defensively with five ground balls and a caused turnover.
Monica Ewansik (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), Kallos and LaRochelle each snagged three draw controls.
Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J Roberts) played the entire game in goal in her first career start, making 15 saves in the process.
The Presidents will host Elizabethtown at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 as nonconference action continues at Alexandre Stadium.
