Presidents kick off 2017 with 1-3 start in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team opened its season with a 1-3 start in the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19.

Day One, Game One - Wisconsin-Eau Claire 12, W&J 0 (5 inn.)
The Presidents were shutout in the season opener as Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) (0-1) took the loss on the mound. Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) began her collegiate career with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both went 1-for-1 hitting as Lapia added a walk.

Day One, Game Two - Wisconsin-River Falls 5, W&J 1
Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) recorded two hits in three at-bats, stole a base and drove in the lone Presidents run in the game with an RBI single to center in the seventh inning. Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) (0-1) pitched a complete game and gave up three earned runs while striking out two.

Day Two, Game One - W&J 1, Wooster 0
Lapia provided the offense for the Presidents in the first game of the second day, launching her first career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andres (1-1) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Day Two, Game Two - St. Scholastica (Minn.) 6, W&J 2
Fuertes (0-2) took the loss for the Presidents on the mound, allowing two earned runs in six innings of work. Lapia and Abby Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) both finished 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Cunningham had the only extra-base hit for the Presidents, a double to right in the first, while Smith and Parker added a single apiece.

The Presidents will return to the diamond on Monday, March 20, when they face Luther (Iowa) at 9:00 a.m. before facing Loras (Iowa) at 11:15 a.m. in Orlando, Fla.
