W&J swept in Monday doubleheader

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team dropped its first game on Monday, March 20, 2-0 to No. 4 Luther (Iowa) followed by an 11-2 five-inning loss to Loras (Iowa).

In the second game, the Duhawks scored the first five runs of the game, spanning the first through third innings, before Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) plated Laura Ryder (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) on a fielder's choice as Staab ended up on third base after an error on the play. Rachel Marx (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) followed with a sacrifice fly center field to drive in Staab to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Duhawks proceeded to score six runs in the next two innings, five in the fourth and one in the fifth, to envoke the eight-run mercy rule and yield the final margin.

In the first game of the day, Annie Versnik of No. 4 Luther College pitched a no-hitter, allowing just one walk.

Abby Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) went 2-for-2 in the second game, while Ryder and Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) both added a single.

Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) (0-3) took the loss in the second game, lasting 3.2 innings and striking out two hitters. Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Andres (1-2) pitched a complete game against Luther in the opening game of the day and allowed two runs, none earned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Presidents will return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 22, when they face St. Lawrence (N.Y.) at 2 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
