NORFOLK, Va. --
Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) both totaled five points, but it was not enough as the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team fell, 18-12, to Virginia Wesleyan on Monday night, March 20.
After the Marlins scored the first three goals of the game, the Presidents scored four straight, two from LaRochelle, to take a 4-3 lead. Both teams exchanged one goal before Virginia Wesleyan scored four of the next five goals to regain the lead at 8-6. The teams went into halftime tied at eight goals apiece after Kallos scored her first two goals of the game with under three minutes to play in the half.
Through the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Marlins outscored the Presidents just 3-2 to take an 11-10 edge but the Marlins went on to score four straight goals in a 3:46 span after the Presidents cut it to a one-goal game, extending their lead to 15-10. Over the final 8:40 of the game, the Presidents were outscored 3-2 as the Marlins continued to pull away to yield the final score.
LaRochelle finished with five goals, her third game this year with at least five with all three occurrences coming in the last four games. Kallos recorded her second straight hat trick to go along with two assists for a season-high five points.
Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) scored and assisted once while
Monica Ewansik (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and
Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) added a goal each.
Kallos and
Katelynn Linthicum (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) tied the game high with five ground balls each and four caused turnovers each. Kallos led the Presidents with six draw controls and LaRochelle won three draw controls.
Michaela Mulokey (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) (1-3) stopped a career-high 18 shots in 47:28 of action before
Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J Roberts) relieved her and made five saves.
The Presidents will get back in action on Wednesday, March 29, when they host Muskingum in a 5 p.m. nonconference showdown.
