ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Purple Raiders scored three goals in the fourth quarter while holding the Presidents to just one as Mount Union rallied past Washington & Jefferson by a score of 9-8 in nonconference men's lacrosse action.
Mount Union led 5-4 at halftime thanks to a man-up goal with 20 seconds remaining in the first half. W&J, however, scored three of the four goals in the third quarter, including a man-up goal with 52 seconds left by
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), to hold a 7-6 lead through 45 minutes, but the hosts scored twice in the first 1:27 of the final frame to earn the victory.
Heinig led the Presidents and matched the game high with four goals.
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was next on the team with three points on two goals and an assist, while
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) notched a goal and an assist.
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) showed up on the score sheet with a goal of his own.
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) went 12-of-20 at the face-off dot and picked up a team-high five ground balls.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) followed up his 33-save performance at Wooster with 11 turnaways against Mount Union in suffering the loss.
W&J is now 2-6 on the year and Mount Union improves to 4-2.
The Presidents will return to Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action at Bethany on Saturday, March 25. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. in West Virginia.
