WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) hit a two-run home run to highlight a five-run second inning to lead the Washington & Jefferson baseball team to a 6-2 win over Grove City on Monday, April 10, in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Â
The Presidents finished off their fourth sweep in five years of Grove City, improving to 16-3 overall on the season, and extended their program-best start to PAC play to 11-0 while the Wolverines fell to 9-13 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Â
After
Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the second, Sciullo turned on the 1-0 offering and blasted his second home run of the season over the left field fence. Two batters after
Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) singled and stole second,
Luke Zahren (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) plated Gatins with a sac fly to right field in foul ground to push the Presidents' lead to 3-0.
Â
Adam LaRue (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny),
Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and
Nick Vento (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) followed with consecutive doubles to score two more runners, capping the five-run second inning.
Â
After the Wolverines responded with two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the third to pull back to within three runs, Helbing got a run back for the Presidents with a solo shot over the left-center field fence, his third home run of the season.
Â
Helbing and Sciullo both finished with two hits and two RBI each while Helbing also walked twice to reach base in all four plate appearances. Gatins also notched two hits in the game to go along with a run scored and Vento finished with a double and an RBI.
Â
Bryce Schnatterly (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) (3-0) earned the win on the mound for the Presidents, throwing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
Matt Heslin (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) entered in the sixth inning with runners on first and second and no outs and proceeded to induce a ground ball double play followed by a fly out. Heslin finished with a line of four perfect innings and struck out three batters to earn his first career save.
Â
W&J Baseball will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 11, when they travel to Bethany at 4:30 p.m. The Presidents have already won the first two games of the season series against the Bison.
