No. 17 W&J needs extra innings to down Bethany, 3-2

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Second baseman Adam LaRue (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) delivered an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as the No. 17 Washington & Jefferson baseball team ran its winning streak to 10 games with a 3-2, 10-inning win at Bethany.

The victory improves W&J to 17-3 overall and continues the best start to Presidents' Athletic Conference play in program history at 12-0. The current 10-game winning streak is the longest for the Presidents since they won 12 straight at the conclusion of the 2013 regular season, which lasted through the PAC Tournament and into the NCAA Mideast Regional. W&J will return to play with a three-game series at Thomas More, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 14 and concluding with an 11 a.m. nine-inning game on Saturday, April 15.

Pinch-hitter Kevin Begley (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) led off the top of the 10th inning with a single and was removed for pinch-runner Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Dan Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Socha went to third on a ground out and scored on LaRue's base knock to right center. LaRue then tried to score from first on a single to right center by catcher Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial), but was thrown out at the plate, leaving the game at 3-2 heading to the bottom of the 10th.

Joe Vita (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) came on to pitch the 10th and recorded a perfect inning in just six pitches, forcing a pair of ground outs and a fly out to secure his first save of the season and fifth of his career.

The Bison (10-13-1, 5-7 PAC) scored a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings to force extras. Helbing surrendered a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game after a lead-off single, wild pitch and sacrifice bunt put a runner at third with one out and a single tied the game. The senior was able to close the door, however, and picked up his first collegiate pitching victory.

Tim Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./OLSH) surrendered his first run of the season in the eighth inning, but limited the damage and kept the Presidents in the 2-1 lead through eight innings.

W&J opened the scoring with a run in the sixth inning. Shortstop Luke Zahren (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led off with a single and moved up to second on a balk before taking third on a bunt single by LaRue. Helbing drove in the first run with an RBI ground out for his team-leading 26th RBI. The Presidents tacked on an additional run in the seventh. First baseman Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) doubled with one out and moved to third on a passed ball. He would then come in to score on a two-out single by designated hitter Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton).

The guests connected on 10 hits, with a combined four (two apiece) coming from LaRue and Helbing.

Ben Marsico (Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up a no-decision in his first career start, twirling 6.2 innings of shutout ball and scattering five hits with four strike outs and one walk on 84 pitches. Will Bowser (Burgettstown, Pa./Madonna (W.Va.)) needed just three pitches to strike out the only batter he faced in the seventh inning.

Bethany's Nick Gross was strong as well in the start, working the first 8.0 innings and giving up five hits and a pair of runs with seven strike outs. Isaac Wengert (1-3) took the loss in relief, working the final 2.0 innings and giving up five hits.
