WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) became the first player in Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse history to reach 200 points, but his four goals weren't enough in a 14-7 loss to Transylvania.
The defeat drops W&J to 4-10 this year and 3-3 in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference. Defending league champion Transylvania improves to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the ORLC.
Heinig opened the scoring at 12:46 of the first half and tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:58 mark.
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) made it 3-3, but the Pioneers held a 4-3 lead after one quarter.
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Mandak and Heinig collected markers in the second quarter, but a 5-3 advantage in favor of the guests allowed Transylvania to lead 9-6 at halftime.
The second half saw a 5-1 margin for the Pioneers, with Heinig the lone President to score over the final 30 minutes (7:53 fourth quarter).
Heinig and Mandak tied for the team lead with eight shots, while
Jake Bow (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) secured a team-best four ground balls.
Lorenzo Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) forced two of W&J's five caused turnovers.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) made 20 saves in cage, his third career game with 20-plus saves and the 10th time he's been in double figures. The total gives him 205 saves on the season, just the fourth time a President has turned away 200 shots in a season.
W&J hosts Westminster in ORLC play on Wednesday, April 19. Faceoff at Alexandre Stadium in the regular season home finale is set for 6:30 p.m.
