WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Seven Presidents scored as the Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team closed out Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play, and the home portion of the 2017 schedule, with a 15-9 victory against Westminster.
W&J improves to 5-10 this season and 4-3 in the league, while Westminster slips even at 6-6, including 2-3 within the conference.
After the Titans struck first, the Presidents rallied with four-straight goals, including three from
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), to open up a 4-1 lead at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter. A pair of goals by Westminster brought the Titans back within a goal, 4-3, but the next five goals were off the sticks off Presidents, including the hosts holding an 8-3 lead at intermission.
W&J built the lead to 15-5 with under six minutes to go in the game thanks to three consecutive goals from
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), and the visitors scratched out the final four scores of the evening with under four minutes left to make the final 15-9.
Curran notched a new career high with six goals in the game, with Ward contributing six points thanks to four goals and two helpers.
Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) (one goal, two assists) and
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) (three assists) each recorded three points.
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), the Presidents' all-time leader in points, scored one goal to bring him within two of tying the W&J goals record. It also marked the 66th game of his career, establishing a new high water mark for all players in Red & Black history.
Ward's eight ground balls led W&J and were his most of the season.
Rocco Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin),
Jake Bow (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) and
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) chipped in six, five and four ground balls, respectively.
Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) caused four turnovers to lead all players and also tallied his first goal of the season.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) made double-digit saves for the 11th time this season, chalking up 18 more. He moves to within seven saves of setting a new W&J single season mark, which would move him past
Jacob Succop's 229 from a season ago.
W&J will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 29 when it travels to former Landmark Conference foe Scranton for a 12 p.m. non-league game.
