Game Recap: Softball |

Stellar pitching earns W&J shutout wins at Grove City, 4-0 and 5-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) and Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both pitched complete game shutouts, giving the Washington & Jefferson softball team two Presidents' Athletic Conference wins, 4-0 and 5-0, at Grove City on Wednesday, April 19.

With the game still scoreless after two innings in the first game, Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) stepped into the box with two outs and the bases loaded and laced a ball down the left-field line to plate Rachel Marx (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) and Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks).

In the fifth, Abby Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) scored when Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) reached on an error by the second baseman to extend the Presidents' lead to 3-0. W&J added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Smith singled through the left side to score Cunningham again.

In game two of the twinbill, the Presidents got on the board quickly when Smith singled to left with two outs and the bases loaded, scoring Lapia and Cunnigham. Andres followed with a two-RBI single of her own to give herself a 4-0 lead after half an inning of play.

Staab came up to bat in the fifth with runners on first and second with one out and singled to left field to bring Smith across the plate and yield the final margin.

Cunningham and Staab both notched three hits between the two games to lead the Presidents while Marx and Smith both picked up a pair of knocks.

Fuertes earned her first win of the season in the first game, pitching a complete game and allowing just three hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts. Andres picked up her third win of the year with a one-hit shutout in game two, allowing four walks with three strikeouts over seven innings.

The Presidents will return to the field on Saturday, April 22, when they host Thomas More for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. with Senior Day celebrations taking place pre-game.
