BETHANY, W.Va. – The Washington & Jefferson softball team was defeated twice by Bethany, 4-0 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, April 2.
 
Rachel Marx (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) led off the second game with a solo home run to left field, her first home run of the season, the sixth of her career, to give the Presidents the early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, 
Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) singled down the left field line with runners on first and second, driving in 
Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour). After 
Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) walked to load the bases, 
Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) singled to left to plate 
Abby Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township), capping the three-run first inning for W&J.
 
The Bison scored twice on a hit and an error in the third and then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a run on two hits. In the bottom of the fifth, three of the first four hitters each singled to load the bases. With two outs, the Bison drew a walk to bring in a run, giving them the final lead of the game.
 
Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) took the loss in the game as she threw a complete and gave up one earned run (four total) on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout.
 
In the first game, the Bison scored one run in each of the first and third innings before scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to cap the scoring.
 
Lapia finished the second game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Doty had three of the six hits for the Presidents in the first game as she also went 3-for-3 while Marx, Parker and 
Emily Jacko (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) each had one base knock.
 
Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) received the loss in game two as she also pitched a complete game and allowed one earned run (four total) on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
 
The Presidents will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when they travel to Westminster for a PAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
