WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson will once again be the top seed and host the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Women's Championship tournament after posting a 15-5 win over Mount St. Joseph on Sunday (April 22).
The Presidents clinched hosting rights for the second-straight season with an 8-0 record in league play with one game remaining. That event will be held at Alexandre Stadium Friday-Saturday, May 5-6. W&J also improves to 9-4 overall. MSJ falls to 5-3 in the conference and 5-8 this year.
W&J built an 8-0 lead over the first 15 minutes of the game as
Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and
Monica Ewansik (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each collected a pair of goals for the first four markers. The next four were scored by
Katelyn White (Linthicum, Md./North County),
Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin),
Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and
Jenna Allen (Sanford, Fla./Seminole), respectively.
Ewansik and
Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) broke up three MSJ goals and the Presidents led 10-3 at intermission.
LaRochelle (twice), Ewansik and Allen each contributed to pushed the lead to 14-3 and Boulas added a woman-up goal for the hat trick in the second half to seal the 15-5 victory.
Behind an even 20 shots in each half, W&J boasted a 40-13 advantage on shots and 30-10 on goal. The Presidents were 16-of-19 on clear attempts and corralled 12 of 22 draw controls, plus picked up 26 ground balls to just 12 for the Lions.
Kallos reached double digits in ground balls for the third time this season with 10 and added a double-double by causing a career-best 10 turnovers. She also matched her career high with seven draw controls, which she previously accomplished in the third game of her career on March 15, 2015 at Methodist.
Brown and Boulas both picked up four ground balls, while Ewansik (three GBs),
Katelynn Linthicum (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) and
Katherine Hooper (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) (two GBs) each knocked away two turnovers.
Michaela Mulokey (Alexandria, Va,/Bishop Ireton) made three saves and surrendered three goals in the first 30 minutes to pick up the win and improve to 7-3 this year.
Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J Roberts) turned away two shots and allowed two goals in the second half.
The Presidents return to action with a nonconference match at Franciscan on Wednesday, April 22 (3 p.m.) before closing out the regular season at Thiel on Saturday at 1 p.m.
