No. 21 Presidents take advantage of Grove City miscues in sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The host Wolverines made nine errors over two games as the No. 21-ranked Presidents took full advantage in sweeping a league doubleheader at Grove City, 14-2 and 15-1.

With the victories, the Washington & Jefferson baseball team begins Presidents' Athletic Conference play 10-0 for the first time in program history. W&J, which has been in the D3baseball.com Top 25 in each of the last two weeks, checking in at No. 21 this week, also moves to 15-3 overall. Grove City, which had been second in the PAC standings entering play on Saturday, drops to 6-5 in conference competition and 9-12 this year.

Riley Groves (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) earned career victory number 21 in the opener, pushing him into a tie for fourth place with Mike Trumpower (2004-07) on the W&J career wins list. The senior righty scattered five hits and gave up just one earned run over 6.0 innings. He fanned seven batters on the day, pushing him over 100 strike outs in his career, while walking just one against Grove City to improve to 4-1 in five starts this season.

Groves never had to pitch without the lead as W&J struck for a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener an RBI double by Nick Vento (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) brought in Adam LaRue (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny). Vento later came in to score on a wild pitch two batters later after advancing to third on an errant pick-off attempt. In the third, Frank Fortunato (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) delivered a two-run single with two outs to push the lead to 4-0.

After the Wolverines lit the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the third for a run, W&J put up a four spot in the top of the fifth. Vento homered with one out, the 20th of his career and third this season. Fortunato was hit by a pitch and Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) doubled to put two runners in scoring position for Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area), who delivered a two-run double and later scored on Luke Zahren's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) RBI single, which chased the Grove City starter, 8-1. W&J would tack on six more runs off the Wolverines' bullpen, including four in the sixth -- highlighted by a two RBI single by Fortunato and a Merlino two-run home run.

In the same way Groves never pitched without the lead in the first game, the same held true for Trevor Kerr (Orrville, Pa./Orrville) in the night cap. Kerr improved to 3-1 after working the first 5.0 innings and giving up three hits and an unearned run while striking out four and walking two.

Fortunato put W&J on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double, 1-0. A sacrifice fly from Dan Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and back-to-back RBI singles by LaRue and Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) made it 4-0 through two innings and W&J struck for nine runs on four hits and five Grove City errors in the third inning, 13-0. Zahren had an RBI double in the frame and Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) delivered two runs with a single.

W&J was held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but posted two more unearned runs in the sixth for the final margin of 15-1. Will Bowser (Burgettstown, Pa./Madonna (W.Va.) and Tim Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) threw the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, allowing no hits and each struck out two hitters.

Between the two games, W&J had eight players with multiple RBI, led by Fortunato's five. Merlino and Vento each contributed four hits, including a double and a home run, with Vento's double representing the 41st of his career, tied for second in program lore. The senior also crossed home a team-best five times.

The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the season series with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch at Ross Memorial Park on Monday, April 10.
