CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson scored nine goals in the second half to race past Mount St. Joseph by a 15-7 count in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action.
Trailing 6-5 at halftime, MSJ struck first 1:22 into the second half to knot the game at 6-6.
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) battled back with a pair of goals for the Presidents to put W&J ahead 8-6. The Lions would cut the lead to one, 8-7, with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter, but
Pat Heidecker (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) answered 21 seconds later with what would prove to be the first of seven-straight W&J goals to end the game.
For the second time during ORLC play this season, the Presidents established a new men's lacrosse program record in shots, attempting 74 against MSJ. That included double digits in each quarter and 25 in the second 15 minutes. W&J doubled up MSJ on ground balls, 48-24, and won 22-of-25 face-offs.
Curran totaled a season-high 19 shots to lead all players. Heinig and
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) both reached double digits as well with 17 and 15 shots, respectively. Already W&J's leader in career points, Heinig set season highs with six goals and nine points to move to 199 career points, one shy of becoming the first 200-point scorer in program history. Ward tallied a hat trick and four points, while
Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) added five assists.
Heidecker chipped in a pair of goals and an assist, plus
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and Curran netted a pair of goals.
Defensively,
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) led the Presidents with seven ground balls, thanks in part to going 16-of-19 in face-offs.
Jake Bow (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) won all six face-offs he took.
Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) was second with five ground balls and four Presidents snagged four GBs.
Lorenzo Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
John Shook (Enola, Pa./Trinity) forced a game-high three turnovers apiece.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) made six saves in facing 13 shots on goal, moving him to 185 saves on the year -- good for the fourth most in a season by a W&J goalie.
W&J will stay in ORLC play when it hosts Transylvania (Ky.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 for Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium.
