Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Ewansik shines as W&J edges Transylvania in OT, 12-11

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Monica Ewansik (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored a career-high seven goals, including the final two of the game to send Washington & Jefferson to a 12-11 overtime win over Transylvania.

The victory was the third straight for the Presidents who move to an even 4-4 on the season and remain unblemished in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference at 3-0. Transylvania falls to 9-2 this season and 4-1 in conference games.

Ewansik tied the game at 11-11 with 5:34 remaining in regulation, 1:01 after Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) brought the Presidents within a goal. Each team had chances as regulation ticked away, but neither was able to break the deadlock.

Just 2:06 into overtime, Ewansik ended the game by driving along the right side and finishing to break a previous career best with her seventh goal of the day.

After each team scored eight goals in the first half, the two teams combined for just six scores in the second period. Three of the first four were from Pioneers, with Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) making it a 9-9 score at 18:46 before W&J went down by a pair of goals.

The game opened with Kallos winning the draw control and driving straight to the goal, scoring 12 seconds into play. Transy needed less than a minute to answer, but Ewansik's first goal put W&J back in the lead at 2-1. Four straight goals by Transylvania put the visitors ahead by a 5-2 count before 10 minutes of game time had elapsed. Three goals in 42 seconds, including a pair by Ewansik 21 seconds apart tied the game at 5-5. The senior answered a Transy score with two goals to put W&J ahead 7-6 and Kallos tied the game with three seconds to play in the first half to send the teams to halftime knotted at 8-8.

W&J was at a disadvantage in shots (37-28) and draw controls (15-9), but made less turnovers (24-20). Both squads equaled one another with 26 ground balls.

Ewansik's seven goals were the most scored in her college career, including two seasons spent at Sweet Briar (Va.). She took 12 shots and added four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Kallos ended with a hat trick and four points, with eight shots, five ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers. Boulas and Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) added the remaining goals for W&J. Katelynn Linthicum (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) registered six ground balls and five caused turnovers to lead all players in that category, with Allison Onslow (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) posting a game-high seven ground balls plus four caused turnovers

Michaela Mulokey (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) made 16 saves in 62:06, two shy of her season high. The senior moved her record to an even 3-3 and her career mark to 15-5.

W&J will remain in ORLC play with a swing through Indiana and Kentucky on Friday-Saturday, April 14-15. The first game will be at Hanover (Ind.) at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. match at Thomas More on Saturday.
