WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team (0-1) fell to Wittenberg (1-0) in its nonconference season opener by a score of 2-1 on Friday night, Sept. 1.

The Presidents fell behind early as Wittenberg scored two goals within four minutes of each other in the first half.
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) was able to cut into the deficit as she and
Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) connected on a corner in the 51st minute, giving Buyan her first goal of the 2017 campaign.

With time winding down in the second half, W&J had two chances with two corner opportunities under 30 seconds remaining and was able to get a shot off on its second attempt, however the ball sailed just wide to the right as time expired.

Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) made two saves as the Presidents' goalie in 70 minutes of action.

W&J will be back in action when it travels to Shenandoah (Va.) on Sunday, Sept. 3, in a 1:00 p.m. nonconference bout.
