Presidents move past Elmira with 5-0 win

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The first Washington & Jefferson goal came less than two minutes into the first half as the field hockey team cruised past Elmira, 5-0, in Empire 8 action on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The Presidents improve to 2-3 overall this season, including a 2-0 mark in E8 play.

Ashley Overton (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) gave the Presidents the only lead they would need with a goal in the second minute of the game. Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) followed up with a goal of her own 11 minutes later with the assist coming from Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford). W&J took a 3-0 lead into halftime after Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) added her second goal of the season in the 25th minute.

Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scored in the 57th minute to provide W&J with an insurance goal before Buyan scored again in the 66th minute to yield the final margin.

Today marked Buyan's fourth career multi-goal game as she took three shots in the game and put all of them on goal. Overton, Fromm and Shaak also put two shots on goal apiece as Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) led all players in the game with five shots, three on goal.

Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) made three saves in the game to record her 10th career shutout and second in the last three games.

As a team, W&J outshot Elmira 21-5 in total shots, including 13-2 in the first half, and put 13 shots on goal in the game to just three for Elmira.

The Presidents will return to the field on Thursday, Sept. 21, when they host Oberlin in a 7:00 p.m. nonconference matchup.
