STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team ran its winning streak to five games with a 2-1 defeat of Franciscan on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in nonconference action.
Â
The Presidents improve to 5-2 overall for the season while their five-game winning streak is the longest since the 2013 team won five in a row in the middle of the season.
Â
Aleksandr DeHaven (Tampa, Fla./Plant) tallied the first goal of the game with his first score of the season in the 29th minute, heading in a free kick from
Jason Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park). Four minutes later,
Connor Anderson (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore) found the back of the net for the first time this year as well off a corner kick taken by
Sam Dudley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair).
Â
The Barons didn't get on the board until the 71st minute but the Presidents were able to hang on to the one-goal lead over the final 19 minutes.
Â
DeHaven shot twice in the match with one going on net while Anderson's goal proved to be the game-winner, the second time in three games that a W&J freshman has been responsible for the deciding goal after
Thomas Davidson's (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) 84th-minute winner against La Roche last Wednesday.
Â
Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson),
Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Matt Prezioso (Clairton, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) also provided a strong offensive effort as each finished with two shots in the match.
Â
Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made two saves to earn his fifth win of the season.
Â
As a team, W&J outshot Franciscan 12-9 and held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
The Presidents will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 23, for their fifth consecutive road game at Marietta in a 4:00 p.m. nonconference match.
