MARIETTA, Ohio – A
Garrett French (Palm, Pa./Homeschooled) header in the 90th minute and a
Jacob Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) breakaway goal in the 103rd minute led the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 double overtime win at nonconference foe Marietta on Saturday, Sept. 23.
Â
The Presidents clinch their sixth straight win, the longest win streak by the program since 2010 (seven games), as their overall record improves to 6-2 while the Pioneers fall to 5-2-1 overall.
Â
With both teams tied at one goal apiece,
Alex Blout (Apopka, Fla./Apopka) sent a long through ball that ended up on Fetterman's foot just outside the 18-yard box in the 103rd minute. Fetterman had a one-on-one with the Marietta keeper and beat him to the lower left corner to claim the win.
Â
Trailing by a goal and with time running out in regulation, W&J was awarded a free kick.
Matt Prezioso (Clairton, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) sent the attempt into the six-yard box where French connected on a header to the lower left corner with just 45 seconds remaining to get the game into overtime.
Â
The lone Pioneer goal was scored in the 26th minute on a shot from outside the penalty box to the lower right corner of the net.
Â
Fetterman's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season and his second game-winner. He got three shots off for the Presidents, including two on target, to lead the Presidents' attack while French's goal was his second of the year and his only attempt on net in the contest.
Â
Prezioso's helper to French was his team-leading fourth assist of the season while Blout's assist on the match-clinching goal was his second of the campaign.
Â
Kyle Wisniewski (Green Bay, Wis./South West) was able to put both of his attempts on goal while
Sam Caurdy (Brighton, Mich./Brighton),
Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson)
Aleksandr DeHaven (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and
Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) all put one shot on goal.
Â
Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) played all 102:25 in net for the Presidents and made five saves to earn his sixth win of the season.
Â
As a team, W&J took 12 shots and held a 9-6 edge over Marietta in shots on goal.
Â
The Presidents will return home for the first time in five games on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when they host Muskingum at 5:00 p.m. in their final nonconference match of the season.
