Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Presidents' winning streak reaches seven games after 3-0 win

WASHINGTON, Pa. – A goal in the first half and an assist in the second half from Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) led the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team in a 3-0 win over Muskingum at home on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the final nonconference match of the regular season.

The win gives the Presidents their seventh consecutive win, tying their longest win streak since 2010, as their overall record sits at 7-2 while the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-6-1 overall.

In the 14th minute, the Presidents were awarded a free kick about 25 yards from the goal following a foul. Mokrzan lined up his shot and buried it past the diving Muskingum keeper inside the left post. Just 10 minutes later, W&J had control of the ball deep in enemy territory. Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) passed from the goal line to Garrett French (Palm, Pa./Homeschooled), who was waiting for the pass about 12 yards out. French turned shot through traffic and found the back of the net to give the Presidents a 2-0 lead.

The final W&J tally didn't come until the 70th minute when Mokrzan was able to gather a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. He turned and passed the ball across the box towards a sprinting Matt Prezioso (Clairton, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). Without breaking stride, Prezioso fired his shot towards the left post and in as the ball clipped the diving keeper's hand on the way by.

Mokrzan's three points tied his career high set on Oct. 26 of last season at Westminster. He finished with five total shots and was able to put four of them on goal. French's and Prezioso's goals were their second of the season as French has now scored in back-to-back games. French took two shots in the match with one on goal and Prezioso took four shots with two on target.

Kotkiewicz's helper on French's goal was his third assist of the season, tying Prezioso for the team lead. He, Jason Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park), Gavin Pritchard (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and Chase Goodwin (Mifflin, Pa./Juniata) rounded out the seven Presidents with multiple shots in the game.

Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) combined on the W&J shutout as Stasko made three saves over the first 77:59 of action to earn the win. Donlon covered the final 12:01 in net but strong defensive play yielded no shots on goal against the freshman.

As a team, W&J outshot Muskingum 24-8 in total shots, including 17-4 in the second half, and was able to put 10 shots on goal to just three by the Fighting Muskies.
