How it Happened: The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team opened its four-game weekend schedule with a 19-2 loss at Salem International.

Top Performers: Nick Spehar (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Troy Smith (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) tallied the W&J scores as Spehar scored in the second quarter and Smith in the third.

How it Happened: The Presidents began competition on Saturday with a close 14-12 loss to Monmouth (Ill.) in their home pool.

Top Performer: Smith scored six goals to lead the W&J attack, scoring once in the first period, twice in the third and three times in the fourth.

The Rest: Ian Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded a hat trick as he scored one goal in the first quarter and two in the second. Tyler Francis (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Spehar and Dylan Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) each scored one goal to round out the W&J scoring in the game.

How it Happened: W&J concluded its Saturday with a close 18-15 loss to McKendree (Ill.).

Top Performers: Smith scored five goals in the game, including at least one in each quarter, highlighted by two in the third. Chonghwi Yoon (Seoul, South Korea/Pennington School (N.J.)) also had a strong game, scoring once in the second and fourth quarters and twice in the third to total four goals.

The Rest: Spehar recorded a hat trick in the game, scoring once in the first, second and fourth quarters while Francis and Gwinn both scored once to round out the scoring in the game.

Opponent: Mercyhurst
Result: L, 16-9

How it Happened: W&J wrapped up play on the first MAWPC-West weekend with a 16-9 loss against Mercyhurst.

Top Performers: Smith continued his hot scoring streak from the weekend, pouring in six goals, including at least one in each quarter, and a hat trick in the fourth period. Yoon added a pair of goals and Gwinn found the back of the net once in the fourth.

What's next: W&J will host an exhibition match against Mt. St. Antonio (Calif.) at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, before taking part in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship at MIT on Oct. 14-15.
