Ruzzini earns 100th career point, leads W&J past Lions, 5-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) tallied four points, including her 100th career point, to lead the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Penn State Altoona on Thursday, Sept. 28, in its final nonconference game of the season.

The win improves the Presidents to 5-3-1 overall and the Lions fall to 3-7.

W&J got on the board early as Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) scored off a corner from Josie Madden (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) in the eighth minute. Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville/Saint Francis (Pa.)) then tickled the twine in the 11th minute as Ruzzini passed from the left of the box to Toohey in the center, who turned and found Grimm on the right. Grimm then beat the Altoona keeper inside the right post.

Madden teamed up with Grimm and Ruzzini to score the third goal in the 14th minute when a pass from Ruzzini to Grimm allowed for a feed to Madden at the 18 yard box. This score held until the 37th minute when Sam Fields (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) scored her first goal of the campaign off a through ball from Jillian Bartman (Finleyville, Pa/Ringgold) up the right sideline to give the Presidents a 4-0 halftime lead.

Ruzzini surpassed the 100-point mark with the final goal of the game, an unassisted tally in the 60th minute as she dribbled around two defenders outside the box and shot to the keeper's left for the fifth W&J goal.

Toohey led the team with six shots, two going on target as she, Grimm and Madden finished with identical one-goal, one-assist performances. Ruzzini took three shots and put two on goal to tally four points, her fourth multi-point game of the season as all four have come in the last five games.

Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) also took three shots with one on net. Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area), Erin Herock (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton), Fields and Shannon Salley (Irwin, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied two shots apiece.

Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) started in goal and picked up the win in her 21:38 of play.  Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) finished the last 68:22 of regulation and made one save.

As a team, W&J outshot Altoona by a 25-6 margin, including 12-1 in the second half, while putting 13 shots on goal to just one from the opposition.

The Presidents will open the Presidents' Athletic Conference portion of their schedule when they travel to Thomas More on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m.
