WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson closed out the first trip through the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a big second-half push to down Waynesburg on the road, 83-72.
The victory moves W&J to 14-2 thus far this season, while pushing the Presidents to 8-1 after one trip through the league. The Yellow Jackets slip to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the PAC.
Waynesburg led by double digits three times in the first half, including early in the second quarter, but a 14-4 run by the Presidents over a 5:29 span tied the score at 30-30 with 4:04 remaining in the first half. The hosts immediately responded with a 7-0 run of their own, and by the time all was said and done in the period, Waynesburg led by four at halftime, 39-35.
The hosts worked their lead out to eight (45-37) after 1:37 had elapsed in the third quarter, but an 11-3 run from W&J knotted the game at 48-48. Overall, a 17-5 spurt in favor of the Presidents lasted 4:20 and was highlighted by 11 points from
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the run, giving W&J a lead it would not relinquish after back-to-back triples at 4:43 and 4:03.
A three-pointer by
Taley Dunaway (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) to open up the fourth quarter gave W&J a 10-point advantage at 67-57, but the Yellow Jackets would get no closer than six points (72-66 at 5:51).
Parker led the Presidents with her fourth 20-plus point showing of the season, recording 23 points, including 14 in the second half. She hit on 4-of-6 three-pointers and 9-of-17 shots from the floor, plus pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Amirah Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) had 19 points to reach double figures for the fifth-straight games. The senior also had four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) tallied a season high of 16 points, plus added six boards and five steals. Dunaway finished with 12 points on 4-of-4 from beyond-the-arc.
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led W&J with five assists.
The Presidents made 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from three-point range and held a slight, 38-34, rebounding advantage.
W&J will return home to host PAC action against Geneva at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20.
