DeVito's career-high 21 points not enough to upend Geneva

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team came up just short in a 81-76 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Geneva on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Trailing 48-38 at the start of the second half, the Presidents gradually chipped away at the lead as they outscored the Golden Tornadoes 31-19 to take a 69-67 advantage with five minutes remaining. This was W&J's first lead since the fourth minute of the game, when it was ahead by a score of 11-9. Geneva quickly tied the game at 69, and both teams split the next six points before a 9-4 run by Geneva in the final two minutes cemented the victory.

Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) led the offense with a career-high 21 points, including five three-point field goals, and added four assists. Brian Graytok (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied 16 points on 7-of-12 from the floor. The Presidents made ten three-pointers, three from Matt Kanan (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz). Amos Luptak (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) commanded the offensive effort with eight assists, followed by DeVito with four.

Defensively, DeVito reigned in a game-high eight boards and came away with two steals. Luptak and Sean Stinelli (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) grabbed three rebounds apiece, while Luptak added three steals.

The Presidents will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 7:30 p.m. road game against Saint Vincent.
