Presidents shake off sluggish start to rally past Wolverines, 60-55

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson recovered from a slow start to capture a 60-55 Presidents' Athletic Conference road win against Grove City.

The W&J women's basketball team improves to 16-3 on the season and 10-2 in the PAC, while Grove City drops to 12-7 this year and 7-5 in league competition.

The Presidents scored the first four points of the game and a layup by Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) at 7:01 of the opening quarter made it 6-3. It would be the final points of the period for W&J, however, as the Wolverines held a 15-6 lead through 10 minutes. W&J started to battle back in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts 15-11 in the period and cutting the margin to 26-21 at halftime.

After an even third quarter, W&J started the fourth period with a 12-2 run to take its first lead since early in the game on a Gilbert three-point play with 6:33 remaining that made it a 47-45 game. A bucket by Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) marched the margin to four, but GCC answered with five points to reclaim the lead at 50-49 with 2:14 to play. Amirah Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) quickly responded with a layup to give W&J a lead it would not relinquish as part of a 7-0 run that was finished by five points from Parker en route to the 60-55 victory.

As a team, W&J held Grove City under 30 percent shooting at 29.6 percent (16-of-54), behind a 6-for-28 showing (21.4 percent) in the second half. It is the fifth time the season the Presidents have held an opponent under 30 percent from the floor. The home team more than doubled W&J on the boards, accumulating 50 rebounds to just 24 for the Presidents.

Parker's game-high 21 points were her fifth 20-plus point effort of the season and included 14 second-half markers. In total, the junior shot 8-of-13 from the floor and made two of her four three-point attempts. She also corralled a team-best eight rebounds and secured four steals to lead all players.

Moore joined Parker in double figures with 15 points, moving her to 995 career points, five shy of becoming the 17th President to reach 1,000 points. Gilbert had 12 points and a game-best five assists, matching her season high for the sixth time.

W&J will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 31, hosting Westminster in a 6 p.m. PAC tip-off.
