GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson used big scoring advantages in the first and third quarters to cruise to an 80-46 Presidents' Athletic Conference win at Thiel on Wednesday night (Jan. 3).
The victory improves W&J to 11-1 on the season as the Presidents remain unblemished in the PAC at 5-0. It also marked the 399th win in the career of head coach
Jina DeRubbo, who will go for career victory number 400 in W&J's next contest, a 1 p.m. tip-off against Chatham on Saturday, Jan. 6.
Tied at 2-2 early, W&J used a 12-0 run to take a 14-2 advantage just after the midway point of the first quarter. During the spurt, the Presidents shot 5-of-8 from the field and held the Tomcats to 0-for-7.
Nicole Ricketts (Montgomery Village, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep), making her first career start, began the run with a three-pointer; that triple was followed by three points from
Amirah Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon), which sandwiched a pair of layups by
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) closed the run with a layup at 4:51 of the first. The remainder of the opening period was back-and-forth, with W&J holding a 25-12 lead after 10 minutes.
Thiel got within nine points at 28-19 at 4:09 of the second quarter, but the next 13:46 saw W&J control play to the tune of 42-9. Over the course of that run that lasted until nearly the end of the third quarter, the Presidents made more shots (17-of-33) than the Tomcats attempted (3-of-15), and recorded seven steals off of 10 Thiel turnovers. Parker totaled 14 points in that time frame, with Gilbert adding nine,
Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) posting seven and Moore and
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) combining for eight points.
Parker led the Presidents on the evening with 20 points and 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season and the 11th of her career. It also marked the seventh time she has topped 20 points in her two-plus seasons in red & black as the junior made 9-of-11 shots from the field. Gilbert reached double figures for the second time in the last seven games after doing so in each of her first five career outings, contributing 19 points and three steals against the Tomcats.
Lawhorne established a new season high for a consecutive game, adding 14 points on 5-of-9 from the floor. She also collected seven rebounds in the victory. Moore got to at least 10 points for the ninth time in 12 games this year, handing out three assists as well. Ricketts and Seto each scored six points, with Ricketts adding six rebounds and three assists and Seto pulling down nine rebounds for the third-straight game.
W&J dominated in the paint to the tune of 46-8 and scored 25 points off 17 Thiel turnovers. A plus-19 rebounding margin (55-36) was highlighted by 22 offensive rebounds and allowed the Presidents to score 22 second chance points.
