Volleyball takes down Thiel in four, 3-1

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- After three two-point sets, the Presidents claimed an eight-point victory in the decisive fourth set to earn a 3-1 victory at Thiel.

The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team won the first set, 30-28, before dropping a 27-25 decision and then posting a 25-23 win in the third set before claiming the match via a 25-17 fourth-set win.

Four Presidents reached double figures in kills, led by Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Bridget Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle), who tied with 13 apiece. Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) dished out 55 assists, her second-most of the season. In the match, W&J recorded nine service aces, tied for the second-highest total of the year, with both Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) each firing three.

Lydic's five blocks were tied for the match high, and Jacques notched two. Five from W&J reached double digits in digs, led by Makenzie Coughlin's (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) 24. Conner (21) and Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) (20) each topped 20 digs, plus O'Brien turned in a double-double with 15 digs. Simpson was the fifth President in double figures at 16.

W&J, which improved to 13-9 overall and 9-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, will travel to New Wilmington, Pa. for an 11 a.m. match at Westminster on Saturday, Oct. 13.
