Women's Volleyball prevails in five-set thriller over Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team defeated the PAC-leading Titans of Westminster in a thrilling five-set match in road conference action on Saturday, Oct. 13. 

With the victory, the Presidents improve to 14-9 overall and 10-2 in the PAC. Westminster, on the other hand, are now 23-2 overall and 10-1 in the league, with today's loss bringing an end to the Titans' 19-match win streak. 

Today's tilt was close throughout, as the two team's alternated sets in this five-set classic. The set scores from today stood at 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13. 

W&J was led in today's bout by a career performance by Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren), who logged a career-high 16 kills. Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) finished second on the team with 14 kills, while Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) each floored 13 kills. Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was at the center of the offense with 56 assists on the team's 68 kills. O'Brien has recorded at least 50 assists in three of the last four matches. 

Defensively, Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) logged a career-high 28 digs to lead the Red & Black. Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) was not far behind with 27 digs, while O'Brien ended the day with 24. Lydic paced the Presidents with three blocks on the afternoon, with Nelson and Jacques posting two apiece. 

The Presidents will have just three days off before they will next compete, as they return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, with a 7 p.m. home match against Waynesburg.
