W&J hands Waynesburg season sweep after 3-0 defeat

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team clinched a top-three seed in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-13) sweep of Waynesburg on Tuesday night.

W&J improved to 11-2 in the conference and 15-9 overall with the victory. With just three matches remaining in the regular season, and three teams having at least six losses already, W&J cannot finish lower than third in the regular season, guaranteeing at least a home quarterfinal match (if third), with the possibility of a quarterfinal bye (if seeded first or second).

Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) made her first career start at setter and was terrific, directing the offense for 32 assists and a .262 hitting percentage. The rookie also had two services aces and four kills offensively, to go with eight digs and three blocks defensively.

Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren) led all players with 10 kills, her fourth-straight match in double figures. Bridget Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) added nine kills and three blocks, while Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) hit at a blistering .727-clip with eight kills on 11 attacks. She also provided five blocks.

Despite playing just one set, Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) posted four blocks. Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) was one of two Presidents to reach double digits in digs, tallying a match-best 15. Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) had 10 digs and tied her season high with three aces.

W&J will travel to Geneva for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday, Oct. 18 in Beaver Falls, Pa.
