WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The No. 18 Washington & Jefferson field hockey team recorded its 10th shutout of the season as the Presidents bested Utica, 1-0, at Cameron Stadium on Homecoming weekend.
The 10 shutouts are the most in Division III this season, as of the completion of the match. W&J improves to 12-0 on the year behind a school-record 12-match winning streak, while also moving 6-0 in the Empire 8.
W&J, which leads the nation in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts per game, while remaining one of just five unbeaten teams, surrendered just four shots in the contest. The Red & Black utilized a 10-1 advantage on shots in the opening half to lead, 16-4, for the match.
Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored the only goal of the match, and her sixth of the season, 11:52 into play. She received a pass from
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) from the middle of the circle and scored the eventual game-winner.
Boyd's four shots led all players, while
Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) and
Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) each shot three times. All three of Kunkle's shots were on goal.
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) improved to 10-0 this year with her ninth shutout. In 700 minutes in cage this year, the sophomore has allowed just one goal to get past her.
W&J will step out of conference play for a 7 p.m. match against Wooster at Cameron Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
