Women’s Soccer rolls to 4-1 victory over Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson women's soccer saw its offense come alive in its 4-1 victory over Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

By defeating the Bearcats, the Presidents improved to 6-7-2 this season with a 3-2-0 mark in the PAC. SVC, on the other hand, fell to 4-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference.

W&J's four goals are a season high for the team, while its 11 shots on goal are tied for its second-highest total. The Red & Black owned an 18-10 lead in total shots and an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Julie Halula (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) began the offensive onslaught with a goal in the fifth minute. Halula launched a shot from 10 yards out that flew by the opposing goalie.

Freshman Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) put the Presidents up 2-0 with a goal in the 21st minute. Today's goal is Hahn's team-leading fourth of the year.

Following a Saint Vincent score at the end of the first half, W&J put the match away with a pair of tallies in the second half. Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) scored the first goal in the 53rd minute, while Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) took her place on the scoresheet in the 69th minute. Johnston's goal is the first of her career, while Marteeny's is her first of 2018.

Hahn led all players with four shots today, while Caitlin Drahushak (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) each had three. Lexey Finney (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded W&J's lone assist in the match, helping on Johnston's goal.

Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) earned her fifth win of the season by playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Presidents and making five saves.

W&J will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct 20, for a 3:30 p.m. road match versus Westminster.
