Volleyball earns seventh consecutive win, tops Saint Vincent, 3-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team picked up its seventh consecutive victory with a 3-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over Saint Vincent at home on Saturday, Oct. 20. 

The victory improves the Presidents' record to 17-9 overall and 13-2 in the conference, while the Bearcats drop to 9-15 and 5-9 in the league. W&J secured set wins of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-12 in the first, second, and fourth sets, respectively. SVC's one set win of the contest was the third, as they won by a 25-22 final score. 

Offensively, Bridget Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) paced all players with 11 kills, while Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa. / St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) were not far behind with nine kills apiece. All three players posted hitting percentages above .242. Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was at the center of this attack, as she logged 38 assists on the team's 50 kills. 

Defensively, Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) stole the show with six blocks, her second-highest total of the year. Eich was second on the team with three. Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) paced the Red & Black with 25 digs, while Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) logged 16. Today marked the fourth time in the last five matches that Coughlin has posted 24 or more digs. O'Brien finished the day with 11 digs, marking her 14th double-double of the season. Freshman Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted a season-high 12 digs in today's win. 

The Presidents will close out the 2018 regular season with an 11 a.m. home match against Grove City on Saturday, Oct. 27. The tilt will serve at W&J's Senior Day.
