WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior setter
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) crossed the 2,000-assist plateau for her career, but the Presidents fell to visiting Bethany by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) score on Wednesday night, Oct. 3.
The loss drops the Washington & Jefferson volleyball squad to 10-9 on the season and 6-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Bison improve to 13-7 this year and 6-1 in the PAC. The two teams split the season series, as W&J opened up PAC play with a 3-1 victory against Bethany at Waynesburg on Sept. 8.
O'Brien finished the match with 29 assists and now sits at 2,013 in approximately two-and-a-half seasons. She is just the third setter in the rally-scoring era, and fourth in overall program history, to reach the 2,000-mark. The junior is averaging 7.74 assists per set through 72 career matches. O'Brien completed a double-double on the evening for the ninth time this season as she added 11 digs.
Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) was the lone President to reach double digits in kills with 10 at a .346 hitting percentage, while
Bridget Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) was second on the team with eight kills.
For the defense,
Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) paced the team with 25 digs, while
Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) added 15 digs and
Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) tallied 12 digs. Eich,
Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and
Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy) all turned away three blocks, with Hart adding two.
W&J will travel to Saint Vincent for a 7 p.m. match in Latrobe on Friday, Oct. 5.
