WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson women's soccer had its second-half comeback attempt fall just short in a PAC Tournament Semifinal match against Westminster tonight, as W&J dropped a 3-2 decision at Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 31.Â
Tonight's loss brings the Presidents' record to 9-8-2 to end the season, while the Titans improve to 15-5. The setback also brought a close to W&J's four-match win streak entering the game.Â
The first half was evenly fought, as both teams ended the first 45 minutes with a goal. Westminster scored first, as a Red & Black foul in the box resulted in a penalty-kick score for the Titans in the sixth minute.Â
W&J answered in the 37th minute with a long strike from
Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk). After the Presidents were awarded a foul, the sophomore calmly stepped to the ball and drilled a free kick from 25 yards out to knot the score at 1-1. The goal was Saldivar's third of the season.Â
Following back-to-back goals by Westminster in the 56th and 57th minutes, respectively, the Presidents needed to answer.
Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) began the comeback attempt in the 76th minute with a 35-yard rocket on a transition that found daylight just over the opposing keeper's head.
Caitlin Drahushak (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was credited with an assist on the play. With the goal, Floryshak ends the year as the Red & Black's leading point scorer with 10. Â
Both Floryshak and
Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) were close to tying the score in the final three minutes of the match, but both saw their attempts saved by the Westminster goalie, sealing the 3-2 loss for W&J.Â
In total, the Presidents posted a 16-11 shot advantage over the Titans. Floryshak led the charge with six shots, while Saldivar was second on the team with four.
Freshman
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) made five saves in a complete-game effort. Tonight's match brought a close to Watkins's three-match shutout streak.Â
