TROY, N.Y. -- The No. 19 Washington & Jefferson field hockey team earned its ninth shutout in 11 matches this season by defeating The Sage Colleges, 5-0, in Empire 8 action.
Senior
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) scored a pair of goals to get to double digits for the third-straight season. In the process, the senior moved into third place on the W&J career goals list at 43 tallies, while also becoming just the fourth President to accumulate 100 total points (her 103 points rank third all-time).
Buyan got the scoring started at the 19:59-mark of the first half and added an insurance goal to make it a 4-0 game at 59:26. Buyan's first goal was assisted by
Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) and goes down as the game-winning goal. Just 40 seconds after Buyan lit the scoreboard for the first time,
Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) marched the lead out to 2-0.
Less than a minute before Buyan's second goal, 23:25 into the second half,
Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) got in on the action with her fourth goal of the season, this off an assist by
Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor), 3-0. With 20 seconds remaining,
Grace Kovalan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) found the back of the cage for the first time this season, and second in her career, when she tipped in a ball off Boyd's stick to seal the action at 5-0.
With totals by half of 19 and 16, W&J boasted a 35-1 advantage on shots, including 24-1 on goal. Boyd established a new career high with 14 shots, while Buyan and Karr both notched five shots (four on goal).
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was called upon to face just one shot in cage, but turned it away to extend her national-leading goals-against average to 0.11 and save percentage to .960. She improved to 9-0 this season in the process.
W&J moves to 11-0 this season and 5-0 in the Empire 8. The Presidents will return home to Cameron Stadium to host Utica at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 as part of Homecoming weekend on campus.
