Presidents down Redhawks, 78-70, in 2018-19 opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 78-70 victory over La Roche in nonconference action on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Presidents used a balanced offensive effort today to come out on top of the Redhawks, as five W&J players scored in double digits. Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) paced the team with 16 points in a game-high 39 minutes of action.

Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) was next on the team with a career-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Johnston did most of her damage at the free throw line, as she made 10-of-11 from the line.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) tallied 14 points, two boards, and two assists in 29 minutes.

Rounding out the Presidents' double-digit scorers were Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Kylie McKennen (Triadelphia, W. Va./Wheeling Park) with 10 points each.

Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) filled up the stat sheet on both ends of the court, as she posted nine points, a team-high six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

W&J separated itself from La Roche at the free throw line, as the Presidents went 30-for-35 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Redhawks shot 21-for-24 (87.5 percent). The Red & Black also maintained advantages in both assists (17-12) and turnovers (11-18).

The Presidents will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 13, for its 2018-19 home opener against Carnegie Mellon at 7 p.m.
