WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team was unable to find an answer for Carnegie Mellon's swarming defense, as the Presidents were dealt a 77-57 loss on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Henry Memorial Center.
The loss drops W&J to 1-1 on the young season, while CMU improves to 2-0.
The deciding factor in tonight's contest was the Tartans' performance in the first and fourth quarters. CMU stormed out to an early 27-10 lead in the first and outscored the Presidents by a 21-8 margin in the fourth. W&J came out on top in both the second and third quarters, but it proved not to be enough to catch the Tartans.
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) led the way for the Presidents with 17 points and nine rebounds in a team-high 29 minutes of action. With one more rebound, the sophomore would have logged her second career double-double.
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) rounded out W&J's double-digit scorers with 10 points in 23 minutes. The senior shot 4-of-5 (80 percent) from the floor and added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block to her stat line.
Freshmen
Izzy Allen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) both had stellar home debuts. Allen finished third on the team with nine points to go along with five rebounds, while McDaniel record seven points and five rebounds.
For the game, W&J shot 20-of-57 (35.1 percent) from the field, while CMU posted a 49.2 field-goal percentage (29-of-59). Despite taking the loss, the Presidents held their own on the glass, as they owned 39-30 advantage in rebounds.
W&J returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 16, for an 8 p.m. game against Dickinson at the Henry Memorial Center. That game will be the Presidents' first of the annual Springhill Suites Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament.
