W&J takes third at Scotty Wood Duals hosted by Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – With a 3-2 showing at Muhlenberg's annual Scotty Wood Duals, the Washington & Jefferson wrestling team locked up a third-place showing at the eight-team event.

W&J got through round-robin competition with a 2-1 mark after dropping the opener to No. 19 Central (Iowa), 42-11, but recovering with wins over Keystone (51-6) and Lackawanna CC (33-22). In the semifinals, W&J fell to host Muhlenberg, 24-15, before claiming third place thanks to a forfeit from Camden CC (N.J.) (60-0).

Two Presidents finished their days with perfect 5-0 records, while two others completed the competition with 4-1 marks. Junior Michael Heinl (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and classmate Hunter Neely (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth) each secured 5-0 days, with sophomore Jared Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and freshman Manny Dovshek (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) each had 4-1 showings.

At 141, Heinl opened the day with a 19-4 technical fall against Tristan Clark of Central in 5:00. He would score bonus points in three of his final four bouts, earning a pair of pinfalls (5:32 vs. Keystone and 1:13 against Lackawanna), a forfeit victory and also claiming an 11-5 decision against Michael Dougan from Muhlenberg.

Neely, ranked 10th at 157 pounds by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, competed at his usual weight class for his 5-0 afternoon. In the opener, he pinned Central's Collin Groleau in just 2:54 and later pinned Lackawanna's Tim Molock in 6:05. He also secured a pair of forfeits (Keystone and Camden). In the semifinals, Neely squeezed out a 3-2 decision against Muhlenberg's Angelo Maheffey.

Walker's lone loss at 165 came in the Central match when he dropped a 3-1 decision against No. 10 Jeremy Vester. Walker pinned Keystone's Alec Talanca in 2:31 and escaped with a narrow, 8-7 win against Muhlenberg's Dylan Schwartz. His two remaining victories were via forfeit.

Dovshek has settled into the 125-pound class for the Presidents. He opened up with a 13-1 major decision defeat against Central, but later had two forfeits, a 1:11 pin and an 8-2 decision to his credit.

The Presidents will return to the mat to close out action for the fall semester at the two-day Petrofes Invitational at Messiah on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
