LATROBE, Pa. -- The 17th-ranked Washington & Jefferson football team claimed a soggy, 33-9 victory on the rain-soaked grass of Chuck Noll Field to push past Saint Vincent.
With the win, the Presidents improve to 8-1 on the year and 7-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with just one game, a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Waynesburg next Saturday, Nov. 10, standing in the way between W&J and a 26th PAC title and NCAA Division III Championship berth.
Sophomore wide receiver
Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio/Hillsdale) recorded his seventh 100-yard game this year and caught his 18th and 19th touchdowns of the season, leaving him alone in second place on the W&J single-season list. He matched his career high with 12 receptions for 128 yards, moving to 1,210 yards through nine games, the fifth-highest single-season yardage total in program history.
Junior quarterback
Jacob Adams (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) tossed three touchdowns and completed 24-of-35 passes for 205 yards in the win. Junior running back
Jordan West (Washington, Pa./Washington) and sophomore running back
EJ Thompson (La Plata, Md./Thomas Stone) both carried 14 times for 77 and 69 yards, respectively, and each found the end zone once. Senior wide receiver
Tim Swoope (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) caught his third touchdown of the season as part of his three receptions.
SVC got the ball first and after getting to the W&J 18-yard line, senior safety
Zach Royba (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) intercepted a pass at the 1-yard line to end the threat. The first play from scrimmage, however, was fumbled by Adams in the end zone and recovered by senior tight end
Jake Cullen (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), but resulted in a safety and a 2-0 lead for the Bearcats just 3:08 into play. W&J's second possession went much better as Wolf and West took turns moving W&J down the field, first a seven-yard catch by Wolf, then 12-yard run by West, 37-yard pass to Wolf and three-yard scoring run by West, 6-2.
The Bearcats blocked a punt by W&J from deep its own end zone and three plays later regained the lead at 9-6 at the 11:53-mark of the second quarter, which would be the final points scored by the Green & Gold. A 5-yard scoring run by Thompson was sandwiched between Wolf's two TD grabs (five yards at 8:02 and 32 yards as time expired in the half), and the Presidents took a 26-9 lead into halftime. The only points in the second half were on the 8-yard scoring strike by Adams to Wolf.
W&J held SVC to just 229 yards of total offense, including just 33 yards rushing, while putting up 374 yards of its own. The Red & Black defense also snagged three interceptions, including the one by Royba and two others by sophomore linebacker
Max Garda (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and junior defensive lineman
Conor Manning (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township). Manning, who also added a tackle for loss, tied for the team lead with five tackles. He was joined by junior linebacker
Nick Getz (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone). Junior defensive lineman
Mike Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Langley) had 2.0 TFL, including one of W&J's two sacks.
